This is the third year in a row that the Kentucky politician tops the list of potential applicants favored by the conservative lobbying association CPAC. According to a count by the Washington Times newspaper, Paul received 25.7 percent of the approximately 3,000 votes cast. Second place went to the governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, with 21.4 percent, followed by the Texan Senator Ted Cruz.
The result is not surprising, however: Paul is an outspoken favorite of the radical conservatives and had already won the votes in the two previous years. It is questionable whether Paul would also have a majority in the entire party.
The real winner could be Scott Walker
Against this background, experts consider the Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, to be the true winner of the so-called „Straw Poll“. It landed in second place after having gained in polls in the past few weeks.

In 2008 she failed in the party’s internal primary campaign because of Barack Obama, who is no longer allowed to run in the 2016 elections after two terms in office. At the end of November, former Senator Jim Webb became the first Democrat to run for the presidency.
Two political outsiders have further expanded the field of applicants for the US presidency. Former CEO of technology company Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina, and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson announced their presidential nominations for the 2016 election. Both will enter the Republican primary race.

Carson confirmed his plan in an interview broadcast by the TV station WKRC. The eloquent political newcomer is so far the only African-American applicant with the Conservatives. Carson came to fame well beyond the borders of the United States as chief physician of neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital in Baltimore. He held the post for 29 years. Carson led the first operation on Siamese twins who had grown together at the back of the head.
The 63-year-old has never held a political office. But he has been a star among conservative activists since he gave a brilliant speech at a prayer event in Washington in 2013. Carson sharply criticized the modern welfare state and the direction the US is headed. President Barack Obama was only a few feet away at the time.
Inexperience does not concern him
Carson now hopes to capitalize on his reputation as a medical legend, book author and speech talent. His political inexperience does not concern him. Rather, he sees this as a gain, he said recently. „I consider myself a logical American with common sense. I think that will resonate with many Americans regardless of their political party.“

Sharp criticism of Clinton

In recent months, she has appeared as a sharp critic of the former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Clinton is the Democrats‘ favorite for the presidential nomination.
Will Bush get in the ring too?
Fiorina said she had great admiration for Clinton. But this is „obviously not trustworthy“. Fiorina spoke of a lack of transparency, including in connection with the 2012 attack on the US Mission in Benghazi, Libya, Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State and foreign donations to the Clinton Family Foundation.

Although the Hamburg Film Festival had to go on stage at a significantly reduced rate this year due to the corona, festival director Albert Wiederspiel is satisfied with the response. „For the fact that we only had so few seats and significantly fewer films than usual in the program, it went really well,“ said Wiederspiel of the German Press Agency in Hamburg.

This year, the film festival had offered streaming tickets for around 50 films for the first time due to the corona. However, the tickets were not sold out. „The cinema numbers are better than the streaming numbers, which personally pleases me as a cinema man.“ The film festival audience prefers to watch the new films in the cinema rather than on the sofa.
For the trade visitors of the festival, however, the streams were a good addition, because „they not only reach the Hamburg film industry, but also those in Cologne and Munich“. There had been around a dozen specialist events as part of the film festival. Wiederspiel intends to keep these streams in the next year.
The Hamburg Film Festival ended on Saturday evening with the multiple award-winning film „Nomadland“ by Chloé Zhao and the exceptional actress Frances McDormand.
The film „Gunda“ by director Victor Kossakovsky won the audience award of the 28th Hamburg Film Festival, endowed with 5000 euros. The cinematic declaration of love for pigs, cows and chickens that inhabit the planet and that people eat every day raises current questions about the attitude of each individual to farm animals and their keeping. The black and white documentary will be released on February 17, 2021. Gunda is the name of a pig.
The festival opened on September 24th with the film „Enfant Terrible“ by Oskar Roehler. Since then, almost 90 films, television films and documentaries have been shown in the festival cinemas. Among them was Moritz Bleibtreu’s directorial debut, the labyrinthine psychological thriller „Cortex“. Bjarne Mädels directorial debut for television, „Sörensen is afraid“, also flickered across the screen. In addition, despite the corona pandemic, numerous well-known German and European filmmakers and actors stood on the red carpet in front of the Cinemaxx cinema at Dammtor.
The Hamburg Film Festival was the first major German film festival since the beginning of the corona pandemic. Three musical theater pieces that have already been successfully performed will be resumed at the Musical Summer 2018 in Fulda. At the opening, the musical production company Spotlight will be showing „Die Päpstin“ from June 15 to July 7, followed by „Der Medicus“ from July 14 to August 4, before „Die Schatzinsel „is the third piece on the Schlosstheater’s program.
„The Medicus“ is the latest of the three productions. The world’s first stage version of the bestseller dates from 2016 and was extensively revised in 2017. Friedrich Rau plays the main role. In „Die Päpstin“ Sabrina Weckerlin will play the monastery student again. At her side this time is Mark Seibert in the role of Gerold. Seibert has played numerous roles in national and international musical productions.
„Treasure Island“ has also been reworked. The fast-paced action musical comes back visually and in terms of content revised in order to bring even more speed to the stage, explained the makers. Friedrich Rau, Anna Thorén and Andreas Lichtenberger can be seen in leading roles.
Another highlight is already emerging behind the scenes. For the first time, „Robin Hood“ will be staged as a musical. The heroic epic of the outlawed freedom fighter is to be premiered in 2020 in the castle theater. The Irish songwriter and singer Chris de Burgh („Lady in Red“) will co-compose the melodies for the musical theater piece with Dennis Martin.
A year earlier, the piece „Bonifatius“ is to be offered on Domplatz from 22 to 25 August 2019, with a large live orchestra and choir. The musicals makers started with the piece in 2004.
The 100-year-old then chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg war crimes trials, Benjamin Ferencz, has called for engagement for peace and against war. „We have to protect the right of all people in every single country to live in peace and dignity. That is my goal. If you also have this goal: do whatever you can for it,“ he said in an interview with the German press agency at his home in Florida. He has three important pieces of advice that he likes to give to young people: „Number one: Never give up! Number two: Never give up! And number three: Never give up!“
His autobiography will be published in German this Monday. „Always tell your truth“ is the name of the book. Subtitle: „What 100 years of life have taught me“.
Ferencz was not even 30 years old when he tried Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg. He was the chief prosecutor in one of the twelve so-called follow-up trials that followed the trial against major war criminals such as Hermann Göring and Rudolf Hess from 1946 to 1949. He charged 24 leading SS men with crimes against humanity and war crimes, among other things. At the age of 100, he is the last surviving witness to the trials.
Before the trials, he was a US soldier who was involved in the liberation of several concentration camps and exposed horrific Nazi crimes. „There were instructions from the Nazis to shoot through the baby of a mother holding a baby because that way you can kill both of them at once. These are horror stories, but they are true and we have to study them to get them not happen again, „he said in a dpa interview. „I feel like I am speaking for the victims, for murdered men, women and children. Small children whose heads smashed against trees.“
What he has to say is particularly important for a German audience, emphasizes Ferencz: „I have seen that decent people can become mass murderers. War can do that. War destroys all forms of morality and has been glorified for centuries. Me I’ve spent my life flipping that view and making sure that whatever has been glorified is seen as the horrific crime it is. „
He sees the International Criminal Court of The Hague, which Ferencz fought for years to establish and which he calls his „baby“, as a direct successor to the war crimes trials. Ferencz is appalled that (still) US President Donald Trump has announced sanctions against the court this year: „The American President says this year he wants to destroy the court. He did not say that verbatim, but he has announced sanctions against the Tribunal, its members, the presiding judge, the chief prosecutor and the staff. “ A court is the only way to permanently prevent war: „If there is no court to settle a dispute, then nothing remains but violence.“
